Prostate Cancer Treatments Options

There are many prostate cancer treatment options available today. But, before choosing one of the prostate cancer treatments it is important to know the grade and stage of the prostate cancer by getting it diagnosed by a skillful and experienced doctor.

Other factors that are important in deciding what prostate cancer treatments to opt for are age, life expectancy, side effects of various prostate cancer treatments, personal feelings about the potential risks involved with each type of treatment, the possibility of getting cured by the treatments and as mentioned before the grade and stage of the prostate cancer.

Each of the prostate cancer treatments has a different working mechanism on the patient due to the various factors previously mentioned. Therefore, it makes sense to get a second opinion before deciding on a particular prostate cancer treatment. The simplest virtue of doing so is that you get a different perspective on the issue and are in a better position to understand the advantages and disadvantages of various prostate cancer treatments and also know of all the potential risks and side effects involved, in case, the first doctor had missed out on any.

Five Treatment Options for Prostate Cancer

The level of spread of the tumor in the body is the most important deciding factor when it comes to prostate cancer treatments. Prostatectomy and radiation therapy are used for as prostate cancer treatments when the cancer is confined in the prostate gland and hasn't spread outside. In most cases of old men a "watchful waiting" method is used as there is a greater risk of the men dying due to some other disease rather than prostate cancer. A hormone therapy is used for tumors that have reached the edges of the prostate glands as these cannot be cured by radiation therapy of surgery.

Radical prostatectomy is a surgical prostate cancer treatment method in which the whole of the prostate gland and the nearby lymph nodes are removed from the body. This is one of the most successful methods of prostate cancer treatments as long as the whole gland with the tumors is removed. The potential risks involved with this treatment method are impotency and incontinence, that is, lack of bladder control.

One of the prostate cancer treatments is radiation therapy. This therapy has two kinds; external beam and radioactive pellets. An X-ray type machine is used in external beam method. High doses of radiations are placed on the tumor in the radioactive pellet method. Sadly though, most patients who take the radiation therapy report of impotence within two years of the therapy completion.

The doctors supervise the development of the slowly growing tumor in the patient in the "watchful waiting" method of treatment. The doctor and patient wait for the tumor to grow, without administering drugs or treatments, by monitoring the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) levels. If it grows then a hormone therapy is initiated and if there is no noticeable growth then no further treatment is advised.

The prostate tumor grows due to the androgen male hormone. Hormone therapy targets at reducing the androgen levels in the body resulting in the tumor shrinkage over time.

All these prostate cancer treatments have their own potential risks and side effects so be aware of it. Understanding them will help you get rid of prostate cancer in a better way and ensure a healthy life thereafter.
