Prostate fluid is produced by the prostate gland. Though the prostate gland is a vital component of the male reproductive system, It also affects the urinary system due to it being located near the urinary bladder. The semen is characterized by a milky white color; this is due to the prostate fluid present in it. The prostate fluid produced in the prostate gland adds to the bulk of the semen giving it the white color. When sexually stimulated the prostate fluid builds up in the prostate gland and in the absence of ejaculation this can be very painful. The pain is a temporary condition which can be taken care of by either ejaculating or, as common sense would indicate, by taking a cold shower. Such painful situation usually arises due to too much alcohol in the body during sexual activities. The condition can go so bad that the prostate swells due to the large buildup of the prostate fluid causing issues such as frequent urination due to the swelled prostate putting pressure on the bladder.

In some prostate diseases, especially in chronic prostatitis, which causes inflammation of the prostate gland, prostate massage becomes a requirement. The procedure requires a finger to be inserted in the rectum of the patient, just like in digital rectal examination, and then the prostate gland which is adjacent to the rectum is massaged lightly. The pressure with which the massage is performed can be compared to the pressure with which one rubs the eyes. The massage of the prostate gland causes release of prostate fluid. It may accompany an orgasm at times for some. The same procedure is also a part of some sexual practices.

This is a very delicate procedure as too much pressure exerted on the prostate gland to remove the prostate fluid may have negative effects like blood poisoning. Research done recently point to the fact that, unlike the belief, prostate massage performed to remove the excess prostate fluid has no additional effect on the condition than when only antibiotics are used. To take care of the occasional soreness in the prostate understanding the mechanism of prostate massage and its effects on prostate fluid buildup can be a great help.
